My Career |
H.M. Revenue & Customs (formerly H.M. Customs & Excise) |
I spent 34 years with H.M. Revenue & Customs mostly working directly with taxpayers to ensure the accuracy of their Value Added Tax returns. I was involved in the development of statistically based credibility techniques and the Department supported my professional development through the examinations of the Royal Statistical Society and a masters degree from the University of Sheffield. I also worked in Department’s operational research headquarters where I analysed data from trials of new working practices, advised officers on the presentation of statistical data to tax tribunals and used statistical sampling techniques to estimate tax losses. The latter results were presented to Parliamentary select committees. Returning to the outfield for the final part of my career I was involved in forensic accountancy work, assisting investigators track the chains of transactions in complex fraud cases. I took voluntary early retirement from the Department in 2006. |
I have been a statistical consultant since 2007. In addition to my own consultancy, I also work part time for Stat-Help.com. |
I have been on the staff of the College of West Anglia as a part time lecturer in statistics and mathematics since 2008.
